“Awareness of Between-ness”
between Memory and Self
Human perception is to each one’s own. How we perceive the passage of time also depends on the individual’s perceptions of how time may pass. I am capturing the space between consciousness and subconsciousness by merging painting and photography as a means to distort memory. I am making the claim that photography is connected to the conscious mind and abstract painting is connected to the subconscious mind. Using photography (conscious mind) relates to identifiable photographic images, re-presenting the human mind scattering around every moment of the day. It also challenges R. Barthes’ argument that ‘photograph freezes time, however, the images show that it cannot be frozen’, because of our memory. To create a connection with the subconscious mind, I am using the mechanical devise of photography, which signifies the temporal experience of photography as a momentary consciousness, but also it is not true that a slice of time stays frozen as it was at the moment when the photograph was taken, because of memory.
The subject will be the history of my life, self-portraitures, and re-presentation of my childhood memory merged into a self-portrait of my childhood through to now. Human mind is always scattering around consciously, but at the same time subconsciously, the layering of image/memory photographs and abstract self-portrait is occurring
